It is important to occasionally remind oneself why we train
in The Martial arts, and what it actually means to us. Besides the usual
suspect answers of self-development, creating balance, building stamina, being
fearless, slowing things down, having situational awareness etc. etc., when you
go deep inside and ask ourselves this question you might be surprised with the
answers you find.

In one such recent introspection it dawned to me (again)
that The Martial Arts are present in everything we do. At a certain point in
your study, your practice stops being a hobby and transitions to become a
passion. From there it further evolves to a lifestyle of a way of living. I now
know for sure that The Martial Arts can permeate in all aspects and movements in
my daily life. In every step I take, in the way I sit, in the way I eat, in the
way I walk, in the way I wash dishes, clean the house, walk the dog, in the way
I talk to my colleagues, bosses, my wife, in the way I drive, in the way I
sleep!! In everything I do, there are ways I can apply everything I am learning
on the mats. In every action there is efficiency to find. In every thought
there is effectiveness to be found.

Being a martial artiste is like being a priest or a
religious man. He doesn’t pray only when he goes to temple or church or mosque.
He has dedicated every moment of his life to god. Every action he does is
prayer. If your training is limited to the 2 days that you visit the dojo, then
perhaps you aren’t really a complete martial artiste. What you do becomes “fitness”
or a “hobby” or perhaps even “sports” if you don’t carry it with you everywhere
in life.

This is when you take stock of how the year went by, and you make decisions to better it next year. Its a time of celebration and festivity and a season to let the old move out and new move in. This is time when you reflect and instrospect, on your life, and living in general.

Wow. What a buzz. I have some great news to share with you!!!
I was awarded my Godan Shidōshi 士道師 Menkyo (5th Dan instructor Black Belt diploma) 2 weeks ago in Japan at the Hombu dojo. You are given this grade when you pass the only organization-wide (world wide) official test of the Bujinkan system!
The test is populary known as the Sakki 殺気 Test and its taken me 2 weeks to digest what actually happened and be able to somewhat articulate it. It's a milestone achievement for me in the martial arts, a sort of culmination of a journey, though I think the fun had just begun. Read on to know why it is so special.
Traning in Japan
As you might have read, I had the good fortune to spend some time traning in Japan. During this time, I attended classes with some of the top Japanese Shihan and Soke. These included Dai Shihans like Nagato, Noguchi, Seno and Shirashi. I also attended classes by Shihan Arnaud and Shihan Lubos. My training partners varied in rank and nationaly and were from all around the world - Brazil, Russia, Spain, Australia, Argentina, Greece, Switzerland, Germany and many other countres.
I must admit I learnt different things from all of them. Of course I did manage to squeeze in some touristy activities and even a visit to kyoto and photos from there are on my facebook group and page.

So after around 10 days of classes I was recommended by Shiarishi Sensei for my Sakki test. I politely agreed but decided to hide when the opportunity came. I wasnt sure I was ready. You see the thing is In order to attain fifth dan (godan), fourth dan practitioners must submit to a Sakki (or godan) test before the Sōke Masaaki Hatsumi to establish that they are able to sense the presence of danger and evade it, which is considered a fundamental survival skill. The test involves not using any of your regular senses and sensing danger with the feeling of Sakki.

I always wanted to a perfect Godan test (if there's a such a thing). I wanted to roll away in the nick of time, not too early and obviously not too late, I wanted to roll away to the appropriate distance - not too far so that I cant feel any more of the energy, not to close so as to not be hit / cut by a second horizontal sword swing. Ive seen many tests where the test taker just drops their head and doesnt roll away. Ive seen people just move their body slightly or half heartedly. Im not saying they were wrong, but I wanted a perfect Sakki Test.

I started training in the Bujinkan after listening to the Sakki test experience of my teacher Shiva Subramanium. Its kind of ironic now, when I think back about it, and it feels good to know that I have reached this level too.

The Sakki Test
As I said earlier, this is the only organization-wide official test in the Bujinkan! After passing this test, a practitioner is considered to be under the protection of the Bujin, or Guiding Spirits, and is entitled to for a teaching license (shidōshi menkyo).

Sakki (殺気) in general means “intent to kill”. Sakkijutsu (殺気術) is the ability to sense the thoughts and intentions of an attacker that arise from their conscious or subconscious mind. Before the attack comes the ability to sense Sakki allowing one to evade an attack or plot against you in life. So its quiet a bit of pressure on a young mans soul to give this test

.After a few more days of training at the Hombu Dojo, Dai Shihan Nagato Sensei (in the photo to the left) asked me what my Dan rank was was. I sheepishly told him and then he asked me who my teacher was. Right after that he asked Dai Shihan Arnaud to promote me to my Yondan (4th Dan) in itself a high compliment. He subsequently announced that he was recommeding me to take the Sakki test the "next day". More pressure please!

Yes the NEXT DAY!
No time to prepare, no time to decide, just 24 hours of anxious energy and wondering wether I would pass or not. I know that fear is a dream killer. But I had decided to retain the positive anxiety to help me stay buzzed before the test.

The Godan Shinsha ( 5th Dan examination ) which is also known as Sakki Test, “Sakki” 殺気 which means “kill intention”, that is the exam to feel the murderous intent of the opponent. Sakki can be loosely translated as intuition or 6th sense or connection to the universe. This test can only be done in Japan in the presence of Soke Masaaki Hatsumi (picture ...below)
The test is done traditionally in front of Soke and when you pass you wait for him to say "Hai Ok!"
So I knelt and decided that I don’t care if I get hit.
I calmed myself and said I know I can do this but even if I cant it doesnt matter.
I get ready for it and say to myself "Ok hit me. Im ready"
Suddently, I felt this urgency to move.. like something was pushing me from behind. Like something was about to come crashing down on my head. I decided to trust that feeling and so I rolled away.
I realised I had been swung at from behind.
I do believe in life energy and the inter connectedness of everything and this test for me was an expression of something more complex.
I had a few shihans compliment me on my precise timing and good distance and I am glad I could give a "good" Sakki test. I guess not being bothered about the outcome helped get into a state of calm and experience Zero no chikara ゼロ の 力 or 無 の 力, or the power of Zero.
I'd like to beleive everyone has this sense of Sakki. Animals especially manifest this and people who have already had a sense of their own death by either being in a life threatening situation or an accident know this. People who've
faced death, held someone's hand when they passed, witnessed someone being killed,
been in the vicinity where a murder took place, etc., already know what the "feeling"
feels like. No Bujinkan training or sakki test required. Traning in the Bujinkan helps you understand this feeling and this test just brings you close enough to know to save yourself. Its a deep gut felt instinct asking you to move and I'd like to beleive that training helps you to "not" ignore it.

The BIG SECRET
There are no secrets here. Just hard Training. Training helps you listen to that feeling inside your gut and to not ignore it. Training helps you to really learn to throw away the self and the ego to be completely in the moment and this is what I allows you pass the godan test.

One goal of our training that allows you to put oneself in a state of 無心, mushin (no intention, no thinking). When you enter this state of nothingness, you begin to move freely and naturally in time with unseen forces that co-exist all around us. All of us agree that our thoughts have speed. Passing this test requires us to be in a state of no thoughts. This ability marks the beginning and entrance into the world of true martial arts training and is cultivated by constant and continous training.
Soke's Budô is formless and always comes from a state of Mushin. This is what gives it tremendous power and this generates creativity. There are no predecided actions and no preconceived notions and absolutely no intention. Even for me, this is a very high level concept and not easy to grasp and I have read that not so many Bujinkan practitioners can even fathom the idea. Needless to say, the only way I see forward to reach this state of continous mushin is traning.

Can we become pure beings by letting go of all conditioning and only listening to pure intention and feeling? Can we find happiness in this purity? And I know for sure that right and continous training is the easiest path to this goal
In less than 10 hours I board a flight to Tokyo, Japan to clock some hours of training and to enrich my connections. The last time I was there was 2010, and I was awarded my Shodan. The trip was really memorable and I still hold the fondest recollections of my time here. I wanted to travel at least once in a year, but 2011 was the year of the saddening events in Japan, 2012 - I moved to Dubai, 2013 had me settling into a new job and this new country, and finally in 2014 I am glad that able to make it to Japan. I hope to train with Sôke and all the Japanese Shihans while I am there
I mention the word "connection" as a reason for going to Japan, since I feel that should be the main motivation for anyone to go to Japan to train, allow me to explain.

One of the concepts of 2009 was en no kirinai, or "do not severe the connection". That was the year I seriously started my journey (though my first class was in 2008) with the Bujinkan. It seems befetting that I blog about connections before I head to Japan again.
Being Connected
Being connected is a basic human tendancy and its also one of the core principles of our martial system. Remaining connected to things does not necessarily require one to be physically touching the object or person. The concept of maintaining a connection is one that comes from the power of the spirt, soul, and ones will.
Many people train in the Bujinkan without a connection with the source. When I mean the source I talk about Sôke, the Japanese Shihan and the Hombu Dojo and training in Japan in general. I remember how my teacher Shiva, used to go 3 times a year and my Shihan Arnaud Cousergue has been going 3 times a year for around the last 25years (more than 70 times ) to train directly under Sôke Masaaki Hatsumi.
In this new series I'd like to call "Ninjutsu Myths", I plan to address various questions posed to me by my students who train with me. Some of the questions are so common, and many end up asking me the same questions, I actually wonder if people really come to train in Bujinkan Ninjutsu for self development or because they were influenced by cartoons, movies and pop culture.

Many of my students have asked me if Ninja's can disappear and if I can teach them to become invisible. (usually its not a "if" its a "when", as in "when can we learn to become invisible"). My usual answer is something funny or irrelevant but I thought I'd take this opportunity to elaborate.

Myth

Ninjas Can disappear or turn invisible at will.

Truth

Practitioners of ninjutsu can neither
disappear nor turn invisible. Yes all of us would like to know the skills to disappear in a puff of black smoke when confronted by an enemy (or a bad boss, ex girlfriend, present wife etc), but the reality is far from there.

This fantasy seems to have originated because of the the
following Taijutsu principles

1. Be Patient

One of the core tenets of our martial art is being able to be patient. Timing, Distancing and Angling being the most important components for good taijutsu, the principle of being patient and moving at the last instant is one of our basic concepts. (Kotsu)

You wait for
the opponent to make a move and only react to him when he is totally
committed to the attack and cannot change it even if he wants to. This
enables one to trap the opponent using his/her momentum and intent to attack. The outcome of successfully executing this
principle is that the opponent feels that you literally “disappear” from the line of attack
and end up being present elsewhere.

2. Overwhelm the senses
As a follow-up to the above principle,
we learn to strike in multiple number of locations, this prevents the opponent from being able to
perceive your next move and planning his next action
The opponent now is on the
back foot has no idea where you are and his senses are numbed to perceiving
your position. You "disappear" in his mind since he is now solely focused on surviving.

3. Distracting &a then Getting Away
This myth probably also came about because of our basic philosophy of avoidance of conflict. The first rule the Ninjas followed (to safeguard their lives and survive) was to get away. If a ninja could avoid fighting, he would.
In order to achieve this goal, he might have needed to create a diversion of some kind, such as throwing shuriken, setting off a smoke bomb or throwing sand in the opponent’s eyes. By the time the opponent recovered from the distraction, the ninja would be gone. There is no magic involved here – just common sense.
We use distraction in our movement, form and techniques on a regular basis. We disappear yes, but only after distracting.

3. Destruction of the Ego
At an esoteric level, perhaps our martial art is all about realising that in the vast scheme of things you are but a mere spectator. To become aware of our littleness and to to simultaneously realize that everyone else has the same potential as you, is perhaps one way to destroy your ego. The Bujinkan is an art of humility. We are reminded often to place virtue before vice, values before vanity and principles before personalities. Training in the Bujinkan helps you become a true Martial artiste by destroying you ego. In very simple terms, picking fights is ego driven, going for trophies is ego driven, you get the idea. The bujinkan stays away from these and concentrates on self development

So perhaps when they said the "Ninjutsu teaches you how to disappear", maybe then meant that "Ninjutsu teaches you how to let your ego disappear".
When the ego disappears, the real self surfaces. Perhaps we train really to help our ego to disappear and be more real?

So if you ask me casually in class, I'd probably say yes. But if you want to know how, you'd probably have to train. There is no other secret to mastery of ninjutsu, there is no magic in ninjutsu, other than hard training.

So would you like to come to class sometime soon and learn how to disappear??
Train hard, Stay Happy
My reason for having a martial arts blog has changed over the last few years for me. My initial thoughts were to use this blog to convey technique, culture, philosophy, kata, and more. Subsequently this became a forum to promote any specific events or seminars that my group had or I was attending. I realised that the more I trained the more I had to share and the world of budo being so vast and deep there was defintely no stop to the learning. This blog then became a mirror for my thoughts on budo.

The last few weeks of training have been spectacular with the quality of fellow practitioners being really special and thus I decided to share a few photos from our training sessions here.

Our facebook page www.facebook.com/bujinkan.ae has more photos but here is a glimpse.
Last year (year of the snake) it was the Tsurugi

The theme of this year, the year of the horse, seems to be

<span class="userContent" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">

神 - shin/kami: God

韻 - in/un/hibiki: to rhyme, sound

(神韻: Shingin (/Shinin): exceptional artistry of words, poetry or literature

The meaning of shingin is exceptional artistry, and budō is budō, the martial way. This is just a simple definition. The theme is still subject to interepretations and will evolve through the year when our understanding becomes deeper of the concept.

The chinese believe the horse to be symbol of perseverance. The symbolism is also associated with the qualies of speed, high class and being warm-hearted. This year and the Horse
Imagery should remind us to improve ourselves constantly

And to improve you have to take the guidance of your seniors in this art. Ask your teacher and their teacher and perhaps even Soke for his interpretation of theme of the year. Persevere till you find your answer. And afterall the "Nin" in Ninjutsu does stand for perseverance. Stick to your training plan, endure the pain, proceed at a good pace and you will soon gallop like a horse.

A tool that Hatsumi sensei has given us is the kihon happo - the basiscs of Bujinkan. At the end of the day, the basics are the path to your freedom and one cannot be truly free if you are not steadfast on your path.

That said I have to conclude by admitting that the trick to actually finding the true meaning of things is to train. Hope to see you on the mat soon.

December is always a special month in the Bujinkan. The Grand-master of the Bujinkan - Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi celebrates his birthday on the 2nd of December :)

Our Soke (grand-master), besides being a highly accomplished martial artist, doctor and healer, writer, actor, and artist is the founder of Bujinkan System which encompasses nine ancient martial art traditions of feudal Japan. This system integrates physical, mental and spiritual elements for personal growth and development. He is the heir and inheritor of these nine traditional schools of Ninjutsu and Samurai-jutsu and he can also be described as the "last living ninja".

Every year in December his students from all around the world traveled to Tokyo for the Dai Komyo Sai (DKMS) training sessions and celebration of his birthday. I had the luck to be part of DKMS 2010 and it was an exhilarating experience. This is the first year (2013) that there will be no DKMS.

I love the Bujinkan system of fighting. Here is reason #1493

Part of our training includes Junan taiso (junan meaning flexible). This is a yogic method of stretching and breathing. This predominently helps us develop and maintain good physical condition and wellbeing. The exercises promote relaxation, blood circulation, muscle toning and flexibility
All major joints are rotated and stretched in a proper manner while healthy breathing and concentration are practiced.

The use of breathwork through out any given exercise drill set is quite literally mind blowing. The exercises are designed to strengthen the body from the core outwards, allowing for greater muscle and joint flexibility. Furthermore due to great emphasis being placed on ligament as opposed to muscle strength, the practitioner finds they are able to practice effectively right into old age. The body becomes full of calm yet explosive with energy.

The trick to stamina is correct breathing. The secret to good posture is correct breathing. The answer to physical pain & worries is correct breathing. The differnce between "alive" and "dead" is also breathing. Being awarness of ones breath is also the core of most meditation practices.
I hope you come to class soon and learn to breathe right! :)

Stay happy!
Sensei planned a long, ten thousand mile road trip with Eager Monk and Ego Monk.

The idea was to travel across many cities, meet many people, bless, guide & help followers & seekers. The trip was planned to take a year to complete.

The route was charted out, the milestones chosen, the paths marked. The logistics agreed upon and the grand plan decided, signed and sealed.

On the day of the journey, Sensei took a seat at the back of the car. Eager Monk was driving and Ego Monk was navigating the car.

The car engine growled, & its tires crunched the porch gravel. Just as the car reached the Monastery gate, Ego Monk said, “Take a left. That's the shortest route to reach the highway.”

Eager Monk said, “No. We have to turn right. That’s the shortest path.”

Irrespective of which side the car turned, just by traveling a few hundred meters, the car would have reached the highway.

Ego Monk said, “Left, left, left, left, left, left…”

Eager Monk said, “Right, right, right, right, right, right…”

The car, the monks and the day remained still. Argument and dissidence rained everywhere. It was like black rain.

An hour later, things were status quo.

When the two fighting monks finally looked back to request Sensei for a verdict, they were shocked to realize that he was no longer in the car. He had vanished into thin air...

**

Truthfully speaking, Sensei had not vanished. He had calmly walked out of the car and headed back to the Monastery. The two argumentative monks had not noticed him leaving.

In the meditation room, Sensei had performed ‘see-saw breath' meditation with the Monks and & told them, “I failed today. My journey of a thousand miles could not even begin with a single mile.

The reason was because of my mistake. I should have remembered that no matter how eager you are, you cannot have an ego. And if you have an ego, then no matter how eager you are, you cannot go far….”

***

Yes it has been a while since I posted but life has made a whirlwind change over the last few months. Ive always believed life is henka (変化 - beginning of change/end of change) .. and change is the most inevitable contsant. You can see constant updates HERE

Over the last 4 months, I got a job offer in Dubai, I relocated, started a brand new show on UAE Radio, (Josh 97.8) found a house and furnished it, got my driving liscence, and even started training in Aikido (more on that in another post). Govt documents & relocation has kept me busy and Ive hardly found time to train and lets not even get into blogging!! haha

During training, we have a saying - “Banpen Fûgyô” (10000 changes no surprises) and so to stay true to this motto, I've managed to welcome this change with open arms!

Here's good news - Bujinkan Ninjustu training has resumed as usual. I now train on the mats 3 days a week.

Japanese history also lets us know that the Samurai was the main warrior class of feudal japan. Here is an interesting excerpt from a scroll by an Unknown Japanese Warrior. The credo of this creed speaks to me and so I share it with you! :)

The Samurai Creed

I have no parents; I make the heaven and earth my mother and father.
I have no home; I make awareness my dwelling.
I have no life and death; I make the tides of breathing my life and death.
I have no divine power; I make honesty my divine power.
I have no means; I make understanding my means.
I have no magic secrets; I make character my magic secret.
I have no body; I make endurance my body.
I have no eyes; I make the flash of lightning my eyes.
I have no ears; I make sensibility my ears.
I have no limbs; I make promptness my limbs.
I have no strategy; I make “unshadowed by thought” my strategy
I have no designs; I make “seizing opportunity by the forelock” my design.
I have no miracles; I make right action my miracle.
I have no principles; I make adaptability to all circumstances my principles.
I have no tactics; I make emptiness and fullness my tactics.
I have no talents; I make ready wit my talent.
I have no friends; I make my mind my friend.
I have no enemy; I make carelessness my enemy.
I have no armor; I make benevolence and righteousness my armor.
I have no castle; I make immovable mind my castle.
I have no sword; I make absence of self my sword

I haven’t blogged here for a while. There are various reasons for that spanning from being busy to traveling a lot to laziness... but I suspect one of the main reasons is because I haven’t been training enough. Yes there is a connection. There more I train, the more my thoughts get ruffled, the more my beliefs get shaken and the more my conditioning gets disseminated. Now that it’s a month since I’ve been regular with training I feel like I have something to say again. And thus this new blog post! <span style="font-family: Wingdings; mso-ascii-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-char-type: symbol; mso-hansi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;">:)

Some time ago I was asked to write a testimonial on “Why I train”. You can see it here. I concluded somewhere in my head “I train because its makes me Who I am."

This got me started with the unending process of realization .. again... of the answer that eludes most - “Who am I”. Afterall this is the quintessential question that man asks himself time and again. Life is but of course a process of self discovery.

I get into these introspective modes once in a while and the question bugs me till I find some answer and solace and then Im peaceful for a bit again until the next friction in my head makes me ask question myself once again! Cyclical in a way.. like everything in the universe?

Inspired by my friend Purab Kohli and his new show "Life mein ek baar" I realized that In the quest to find out the “real” I listed out my many roles in life and multiple garbs that I wear. Anjaan the Radio Jockey, Anjaan the Programming head, Anjaan the son, Anjaan the Husband, Anjaan the Brother, Anjaan the Brother in law, Anjaan the Professional Compere, Anjaan the social media evangelist, Anjaan the tourism ambassador, Anjaan the Friend, Anjaan the councellor, Anjaan the Party Maker... Who is the Real Anjaan?

I know for a fact that All of it is me.. but at the same time none of it is.

Purab goes on to say that he chose to do the show to find out the real him. Facing fear and using one's intuitive guts is a sureshot path to find out the self. Which is Why I like Training. When a fist attack is being launched at your face by your opponent, you don’t have time to think of who you are, how you sound, what you are wearing and how you look etc. You just have time to feel the attack and move away. This to me is real and that is why I train.

Names, positions, titles, achievements and wealth often conceal the real "self". Try to avoid being blinded by these terms or else you will feel like a traveler who cant find his way home. Happy training and I hope you find what your looking for! :)

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08396067528626814930noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1375614435822485402.post-24376421718001255182011-06-23T05:53:00.000-07:002011-06-23T05:59:49.985-07:00Shinden Fudo Ryu Seminar

It hardly feels like yesterday since I started training and started this Blog. And today I blog from Japan. This afternoon at the DKMS Shihan Arnaud Cousergue walked upto me and asked me IF I was feeling ridiculous wearing a green belt among hundreds of black belts from around the world. Before I could gather my wits to give him an answer he had handed me a blackbelt and the Indian Buyu were clapping and photographs were being taken....

Actually Im still in a state of shock - even though I knew its time for me to get my black belt. Im in shock becuase it came as a surprise even though i was expecting it. I am in shock because I feel I deserve it, but dont know If I am worthy of it. I guess like my 9th Kyu Grade now I will have to deserve it!

For all of you spoilt by the commercialization of Martial Arts - Frankly a Black Belt is NO big deal. Its a hoax actually. Whats important is that you understand the unlimited potential inside you and endeavour to discover the keys to unlock that. Its a Hoax that a world plays on our minds to make us think we have reached somewhere. Its a trick seniors play on juniors to make them believe in something and aim at something. It is what most art practicioners use to make you help make them rich!
Trust me - the whole concept of a black belt is flim flam - its a joke played on the gullible. The black belt is in your head. Imagine if one could free themselves of the options of a limited goal. The possibilities are limitless once this kind of free thinking is achived.

Today I was given my black belt. But i believe Today is the day I AM accepted as a student. Today is when I will start learning. Till now I was learning how to learn - and now I am ready, perhaps.

The trick is to not want success - or failure. Its to just be and keep doing things. Try to focus on your training, there is no substitute for that. The more time, mind and energy you devote into that - the faster you will see results. 1
Afterall showing up is winning half the battle! SO today - Decide to be present - in your present. Become aware of the moment and Enjoy it. AND JUST SHOW UP!!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08396067528626814930noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1375614435822485402.post-53603713944095388052010-11-09T05:34:00.000-08:002010-11-09T05:34:19.121-08:00Henka - Change<!--[if gte mso 10]>

Its been long since Ive posted here. Everyone said after the Shinken Gata (6th Kyu level) your opinion of Budo changes, and thereby life itself changes. Around the same time (after my shinken gata) someone also told me the best way to grow in Budo is "SHUT UP AND TRAIN". I guess I did take this too seriously! :)

This December I head to Japan, and soon I might even have my black belt (Have been given my 4th Kyu a couple of months ago). I fear all my Kyu experiences will fade away and I wont remember anything. And so Ive promised myself to devote at least 1 blog per week sharing my growth in the path of Budo with the world, with you.

Over the last 3 months we (Bujinkan India Dojo) have had the privilege of being visited a International Shihans including Arnaud Cousergue, Darren Horvath. and Robin Doenicke seminar. All these Shihans have opened my eyes to the possibility of us being able to control our lives. If you dive into and fully explore the idea that we create our own reality, you discover that it logically follows that this means we create or choose our own life and death experiences.Training in Budo Taijutsu gives you a practical platform to test out those experiences.

These Shihans have also opened my eyes to the true meaning of the techniques taught by the Bujinkan. And the answer lies in the fact that there are NO techniques. No form. Only variations.
In fact every technique is henka waza, as you have to adapt it to size, speed and quality of uke.

It isnt a coincidence that my Martial name (everyone is free to choose one) is "henka"

Today I truly feel the power of the Martial arts that I'm training, Today I realize that training isn't life, but Life is training. I feel martial arts consuming me. I feel it absorbing itself into every aspect of my life. I feel change seeping through my every pore.
I feel Henka Change is the only constant, its the signal for rebirth and its the egg of the phoenix!

Wish you Happy Changing too! :)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08396067528626814930noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1375614435822485402.post-79589604510624419512010-07-19T04:13:00.001-07:002010-07-20T01:45:22.499-07:00Being One - through Shinken GataYesterday I graded for my 6th Kyu. The grading involved a test called the "Shinken Gata". The matrix of meanings that the words "shin" and "ken" can have are innumerable. But some basic ones could mean - spirit, soul, heart, self, truth, real etc.

Shin can be written using different kanji characters 真, "true" , 伸, "extend" , 新, "new" , 心, "heart", 晋, "advance" 信, "belief" , 進, "progress" , 慎, "humility", 紳, "gentleman"

Ken could mean Sword, fist, weapon among many other things. The dictionary definition of Shinken Gata could be "Real Combat Movement/training"

I have previously spoken about the lack of hitting, no violence and non existence of a sport like sparring situation in this martial art! Yesterday's grading was the anti thesis of all the conditioning I had in my head about the art. This form is as real as REAL can be and yesterday I WAS in a real fight with 6 black belts... and more with "Myself".

I was thrown around, hit, smashed, poked. I even have war bruises, poke marks and blod clots as proof!
No Im not saying the form propagates violence - but I also realised the only way to understand nonviolence is to truly study violence. Kind of like discovering motion in stillness.

Shinken Gata is used as a way of sharing the seriousness with which we are to approach the art. Shinken Gata is a real-life application of the moves we learn with the physical and spiritual consequences associated with taking such encounters seriously. This idea of "one encounter, one chance" (ichi-go, ichi-e) is what separates all budô (martial ways) from sports or mere exercise.

When your body tires and has no energy left, you wonder where to go. People speak of a certain "inner inspiration" and "mind over matter" - last evening I felt it.
I realised training in a martial art form is all about being able to be in this "Zone". And staying there! After my Shinken Gata yesterday Ive learnt that the body has its own thinking and is only infinitely connected to the world and the surroundings through the mind.

Once you acheive this "one"-ness your body will automatically move - without help from your mind. There is no thinking involved. Just the pure essence of feeling.

Once you let this connection control you, you derive energy from everything and everybody around you letting you be calm and composed while actually exerting tremendous physical energy. These connections are omnipresent and are easy to tap. All it needs is a certain "letting go".

Ive always prided myself on being articulate but the feeling of oneness that you achieve after the "shinken gata" cannot be described in words. Like most things in life the only way is to experience it. in the DOJO or Outside.

Ive realised that tiredness or fatigue is a state of mind and pain is in your head. If you take your thinking out of the situation and your mind out of the equation then your Taijutsu becomes Shinken Gata.
I also surprised myself a few times and on reflection am still wondering how I did those things. Now my next aim is to achieve this "natural movement" one-ness more often and perhaps even bring it to REAL Life applications

After reading this I hope you are inspired to find new meanings for "being one"

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08396067528626814930noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1375614435822485402.post-59996982424373033072010-06-22T07:13:00.000-07:002010-07-20T04:11:39.360-07:00Ninjaan Turns OneIts been a year since I started Training in Ninjutsu. Over the last year life has changed terribly. I am not too sure if my Life is affecting my training at the Dojo or its the other way round, but I definitely feel different! They are protectors - not fighters.

The first skill to be developed by a ninja is seishin teki kyoyo, "spiritual refinement" - not competitiveness and a sense of sportsmanship and fair play.

The ninja is a no-limits person. The rules inherent in a sport competition-based system run counter to the strategies and philosophy of ninjutsu.

The Ninja balances the lessons and tools for producing results in combat with those that achieve success in society. A true ninja would never use something like sport aggression to make a name for him or herself.

Add to this the techniques, tactics, strategies, and weapons of the ninja - all designed for one purpose - winning - quickly, easily, and completely. To a ninja, fighting - if conflict cannot be avoided - always comes as a last resort. Not as a means of entertainment and ego-gratification.

This isn't the list that most people expect when it comes to see what Ninjutsu has that MMA, or any other martial art, doesn't.
